Can I use concrete to patch-up asphalt driveway? I may have a water problem.?

I have a 100 foot asphalt driveway that was laid by the builder and it has seen better days. I think I have a underground water problem. In the middle of my driveway there is a 50 to 60 sq foot section across that has slightly depressed and has developed a ton of cracks that make it look like a snake’s skin. I have been sealing my driveway for many years and have been using the cold fillers to seal those cracks, but nothing works in the winter (Philadelphia, PA area, we see snow, ice, freeze/ thaw cycles). My question is: What if I dig out that section of the driveway to about 6-8" depth. Fill in about 4 inches of gravel and compact it down, and then do one of the two things: 1) Either I use cold patch like QPR or quickrete stuff in 2" increments and a little portland cement to dust between the layers until I get to the top…. or 2) I use vinyl concrete (quickrete brand) to get to the top. I can let the repair cure for a month or two in the summer and then seal it with a regular black top sealer (premium kind, 5-10 year warranty), and continue sealing it every other year as I have been doing for many many years…. any suggestions or recommendation?

Has anyone used the roofing asphalt emulsion (Henry’s roofing asphalt) on driveway: I was thinking about applying a layer to the sides of the old asphalt so that it will bind to the new filler and seal the gap between the new and the old and hopefully cure with time to form a good seal….. any recommendations will greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and help

remove broken asphalt replace the soil under it with a road base material 12 inches deep on a driveway should be plenty compact it tight as you can rent a tamper compactor will do for that size area. i think with the area you have you could buy a load of hot mix and with a few shovels and some sweat using a asphalt rake. smooth it out then compact the asphalt with the same compactor used for your base just spray a little diesel on the tampers plate so it wont stick. also you will want to buy some sealer from the asphalt plant to pour on the edges of the existing asphalt to seal new to old. if you feel you have a good base under it you could probably wait a few years to seal the whole driveway. no roofing sealer does not fully cure you will have a trail of it from your drive to the tavern and a mess on your car. call your local asphalt plant they will help you out ! cold mix is just a temporary fix even if you seal it.

I would go with cold patch, about 4" thick. You can add 3/8 minus to fill in some of the hole to 4" below the top. Tamp it down firm and fill the rest with cold patch. Apply an asphalt adhesive to the sides of the hole to bind the cold patch to the old asphalt.
